Frequently Asked Questions

What is the latest version of ORIONMagic?

The latest shipping version is 4.1.5338D. It was released March 30, 2011. To determine the exact version you have please refer to the ORIONMagic Help > About.

Will I lose my data if I update?

No. Depending on what version you currently have ORIONMagic may need to update the format of your cabinet files. In the unlikely event something does go awry during this process, it is suggested to make a back up copy of the cabinet files before updating.
After updating you may also need to reindex any existing indices before they can be used with the new version.
Please contact ORIONMagic Support if you have additional questions.

Where is ORIONMagic installed?

ORIONMagic installs into two default locations.
The first location is C:\Program Files\ORION\Magic.
When ORIONMagic is initialized, it copies files from here to the default user area:
C:\Documents and Settings\<login id>\Application Data\Orion\Magic
If more than one user logs on to the same system [with a different ID] and they use ORIONMagic, each user will have their own user area.

I’d like to give a cabinet to another ORIONMagic user. How do I move or copy cabinets?

Go C:\Documents and Settings\<login id>\Application Data\Orion\Magic\DB
Each cabinet is actually a MDB file. Select the MDB file which corresponds to the cabinet you wish to share and copy the file to the second user’s Documents and Settings area. Use the same path mentioned above. Substitute the login id.

How do I copy notecards to another outline on my system?
  • Select the notecard.
  • Right click > Copy Notecard.
  • Go to the new outline.
  • Right click > Paste Notecard.

This also works for folders.

I’ve installed ORIONMagic but can’t seem to initialize it.

ORIONMagic updates the Windows Registry. If ORIONMagic initialization fails, perhaps you don’t have the ability to update the registry or add anything to your user area under C:\Documents and Settings. Check with your system administrator.

Can I share my ORIONMagic user home directory with another user?

The user area should not be shared.

I’d like to sort the notecards in my folders.
  • Go to the folder in question.
  • Right click > Sort Notecard.

If you have many notecards, the sorting time may take a few minutes. Please be patient.

I just installed dtSearch and now Magic does not work.

ORIONMagic uses the dtSearch engine. Both applications can coexist on the same system provided they use the same dtSearch engine version. Please contact ORIONMagic Support for additional information.

Search

Can I print a result or the result grid?

To print a selected row result:

  • Left-click the specific name within the results list.
  • Click the Print button on the ORIONMagic Toolbar.
  • The Print Results Options dialog box appears.
  • Set the desired print options.
  • Click the Print button.

To print the list of search results:

  • Left-click on the Name bar heading field.
  • Click the Print button on the Toolbar.
  • The Print Results Options dialog box appears.
  • Set the desired print options.
  • Click the Print button.
Can I change the 3D angle of a Chart?
  • Select a 3D chart.
  • Hold the CTL KEY down and move your mouse over the image.
I’d like to include a chart in a DOC file. How can I do this?
  • Select the chart image.
  • Click the Print button.
  • Go to a DOC file in Word.
  • Select Edit > Paste Special.
  • Select “Picture (Windows Metafile)”.
Can I treat parentheses as searchable characters?

Yes. This feature was added to ORIONMagic 4.1.5335E. To use this feature you will need to enable a new option in the Windows Registry. After updating to 5335E, reindex your indices.
Because parentheses are used in the search engine as punctuation, you need to use curly brackets in your parentheses search. For example, searching for {703} will return hits that include (703).
Please contact support@orionmagic.com for additional information.

Can I save search results?

Results returned in the Search Results Grid can be exported to Microsoft Excel. This feature was added to ORIONMagic 4.1.5335E.

Link Diagrams

Link Analysis is not loading.

This might be caused by having multiple JREs [Java Runtime Environments].

  • Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove.
  • If more than one JRE is listed, uninstall all JREs
  • Install a new JRE.

The ORIONMagic CD includes a 3rd Party folder. The supported JRE setup program can be found here.

I have a big outline that includes many tags with images. When I attempt to generate a Link Analysis diagram, Link Analysis comes up but no diagram is generated.

You need to modify the ORIONMagic registry setting with the JavaArgs option. Please contact ORIONMagic Support for additional information.

Reports

I’d like to place pictures that are in the Images Tab in specific locations for a report.

Depending on what style sheet is used, images are added to the bottom or top of a report. To force an image to a particular location within the report:

  • Go to the notecard in question.
  • Insert the following:
    <INSERTIMAGE:#>
in the Summary area of the card to the specific location you want the image to display.

The # corresponds to the number of the image you have in the Image tab. If you have 10 images and you want to place the tenth as the first image to be shown in the report, you would use:
<INSERTIMAGE:10>

I’ve created a report with images and opened the report in Word. When I give that report to others, the images are no longer there.

Before giving the report to others:

  • Click on an image.
  • Right click > Copy.
  • Select Edit > Paste Special.
  • Select “Picture (Windows Metafile)”.
  • Save the file.

Indexing

I can’t see any mapped drives on the Index tab.

This is an advanced feature. Please contact ORIONMagic Support for additional information.

I’d like to index my PST files. When I click on the Outlook tab my folders are not listed.
  • Close ORIONMagic and restart Outlook.
  • Go to the Outlook Tools > Options > Mail Setup Tab > Data Files button > Add button.
  • Select PST type/version. With Outlook 2003 for example, you have the following two options:
    • Office Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst)
    • Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders File (.pst)
  • Click OK.
  • Navigate to your PST file location.
  • Click OK.
  • Click Close after selecting the PST file on the Outlook Data Files dialog.
  • Restart Magic.
  • Confirm Personal Folders are available on the Index > Outlook tab.

These steps are for Outlook 2003 (11.5608.5606). Steps with other Outlook versions may vary slightly.
